Tsunami Preparedness - Oregon Coast
7/30/2018 (Permalink)
A tsunami is caused by an underwater disturbance such as earthquakes. It is a series of waves that can vary from minimal wave height to turbulent waves several feet high.
Tsunamis that occur locally can take up to 20 minutes to form after an earthquake. A tsunami that occurs farther out in the ocean can take up to 5 hours to arrive on land. There is more time for an official warning from the national warning system, NOAA. Evacuation zones and routes for the Oregon Coast are important to know in case of mandatory evacuation notice.
You never know when a disaster such as a tsunami will strike and it is important to be prepared. Create a Family Disaster Plan and review it with your family members. This will aide in a household evacuation and by setting up a specific location to meet after your home is evacuated. By creating an emergency kit, you and your family will have the necessary items to stay safe if an evacuation notice is not needed.
Being prepared will keep you and your family safe, but what happens when you return home and see standing water and damage from the tsunami. SERVPRO of Salem West serves the Oregon Coast and is available with certified crews ready to inspect and being to restore your home.
