When you find mold in your attic, what should you do?

Mold can grow in most environments, from the hot desert to a cold refrigerator.

Think of the food in your refrigerator. When left too long, what happens to it? Mold begins to form on the food and if left for prolonged periods of time, the food will eventually be covered in mold.

Now think about the temperature in your attic. On warmer days, the heat from inside the home rises into the attic space. When the outside temperature cools, the moisture in the heated attic air will condensate onto surfaces and eventually may help facilitate mold growth.

In order to reduce the risk of mold growth, homeowners can install an attic fan that can move air into and out of the attic space. This may not reduce the risk completely but it will help move the humid air out of the attic.

Remember, mold needs 3 ingredients to grow: moisture, a food source and time. Control one or more of those factors and you'll reduce the risk of attic mold growth.
